Kid Pan Alley: Music

My Own Shadow

(Kid Pan Alley classroom recording)

By Paul Reisler, Terri Allard & Ms. Payne’s 2nd Grade, Rappahannock Elementary
One day I was walking just my shadow and me, Down the busy streets of New York City.
I took it out to play in Central Park, And see the Statue of Liberty.
But the buildings were so tall, They blocked out the sun.
I lost my shadow, And it lost me.

Now I’m my own shadow (3x)
That’s the dark side of me.

There goes my shadow walkin’ down the street,
At least I think it belongs to me.
Sometimes it’s my very best friend,
Sometimes it won’t come around again.

I see shadows of every kind, Of cats and dogs, but I don’t see mine.
Sometimes at night I see it clear, It’s inside of me, so it’s always near.
You can’t really lose the shadow in you,
You can turn out the light, Close your eyes,
It always comes back, It always comes through.

Now I’m my own shadow (3x)
That’s the dark side of me.

There goes my shadow walkin’ down the street,
At least I think it belongs to me.
Sometimes it’s my very best friend,
Sometimes it won’t come around again.

Now I’m my own shadow (3x)
That’s the dark side of me. The dark side of me
